| Overview |

| Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is a type of RNA molecule that consists of two complementary strands of RNA nucleotides. It plays a crucial role in various cellular processes, particularly in gene regulation through RNA interference (RNAi). During RNAi, dsRNA is cut into short RNA duplexes, 21 to 28 nucleotides long, which then guide the recognition and ultimately the cutting or translation repression of complementary single-stranded RNAs, such as messenger RNAs or viral genomic/ antigenomic RNAs. These short RNAs are also believed to guide chromatin modification. RNAi can be used for large-scale screens to systematically shut down each gene in a cell, helping to identify the components necessary for a specific cellular process. This pathway is also a practical tool in biotechnology, medicine, insecticides, plant development, and germplasm improvement. |
